A new report by the OSSI-project has been released. Our portion in the report concerns the survey we did on Deddian, Gnome, MySQL and Eclipse communities. One of the most interesting results were that all of the communities have quite favourable attitudes towards working on the software together with companies. This even though there is a clear ideological difference and difference between motivations and backgrounds in the communities. Most of Eclipse developers get paid to do it, and are not that interested in FOSS ideology, while Debian, in particular, still is a community of hobbyists and ethusiasts with a strong ideological consciousness. The emergence of “salary based” OS communities would certainly warrant more research.
